How providers compare, measured

A vCPU is not the same everywhere. Every quarter we rent each provider’s base machine (its cheapest plan with at least 2 vCPU and 4 GB), run the same CPU test and publish the result, with the raw output.

CPU per vCPU

What one vCPU of each provider’s base machine does: sysbench, a thread per vCPU, divided by vCPUs. Higher is faster.

How we test

  • The machine — each provider’s cheapest plan with at least 2 vCPU and 4 GB, chosen from today’s catalogue.
  • CPU, whole machine — sysbench cpu, a thread per vCPU, events per second over 60 s.
  • CPU per vCPU — the whole-machine result divided by its vCPUs: what one of its vCPUs is worth.

3 runs a quarter in up to 3 of the provider’s regions, each on a fresh server; the result is their median. Plans billed by the hour cost 2 hours a run; plans billed only by the month cost a month. The script is bench/run.sh; the raw output of every run is published with the result.
